It\u2019s unlikely you\u2019ve ever faced such a significant challenge. You may be in a front line organisation with staff in personal danger; you may be worried for the very survival of your business, wondering how to change direction or you may be struggling to cope with unprecedented demand for your services. Whatever the situation, this is not business as usual and it will be a test of your leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Not least because the whole organisation will be looking to you for guidance. But who looks after the leaders?<\/p>\n<h2>Rising to the Leadership Challenge<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3843 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Caroline-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Caroline-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Caroline-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Caroline-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Caroline-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Caroline-624x351.png 624w, https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Caroline.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In our webinar, Caroline Gourlay, business psychologist and leadership expert took us through a <a href=\"https:\/\/carolinegourlay.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/31\/so-youre-a-leader-what-do-you-actually-do\/\">leadership model<\/a> that looked at the 8 tasks of leadership and how the pandemic has challenged previous leadership priorities.\u00a0 The key lesson is that, whilst no leader is good at every part of the model, it is important to ensure that energy isn&#8217;t devoted exclusively to only one area which would result in lop-sided leadership.<\/p>\n<h2>Coping with pressure<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3853 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Coping-300x183.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Coping-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Coping.jpg 555w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The pandemic has disrupted plans and certainties and coping with pressure has never been more pertinent for leaders, especially with the additional challenge of working remotely from the business and team.\u00a0 Caroline said that it was important that leaders accept that this is difficult and have <a href=\"https:\/\/carolinegourlay.wordpress.com\/2020\/04\/30\/looking-after-number-one\/\">self-compassion<\/a> but to set time aside to look after their own health and well-being.\u00a0 In Carolines words,\u00a0&#8220;You&#8217;re no use to your business if you keel over.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Priorities for the leaders<\/h2>\n<p>Throughout the webinar Caroline posed questions to the audience which was made up of leaders of businesses based in the UK and internationally.\u00a0 The session examined how the pandemic had affected the aspects of leadership.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3851 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Leader-pie-300x185.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Leader-pie-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Leader-pie.jpg 568w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was overwhelming agreement from the attendees that the biggest question for leaders now was &#8216;Where do we go next?&#8217;.\u00a0 The number of leaders now prioritising that has doubled.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Strategic issues<\/h2>\n<p>Whilst it was good to see that there was a healthy number of businesses focusing on capitalising on new opportunities, that was equally balanced with the need to get everyone aligned, how to <a href=\"https:\/\/carolinegourlay.wordpress.com\/2020\/06\/26\/what-next-who-knows-living-with-uncertainty\/\">navigate uncertainty<\/a>, and simply, how to survive.<\/p>\n<h3>Operationally<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3850 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Leader-chart-2-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Leader-chart-2-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.goodmanjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Leader-chart-2.jpg 565w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, leaders are most concerned about\u00a0 the economic uncertainty we are facing followed by the impact of further Covid spikes.\u00a0 Financing and cashflow remains key.<\/p>\n<p>The pandemic has propelled the discussion about shifting working patterns and the need for leadership styles to shift accordingly.
