Role & Expertise:

My primary focus is providing practical and commercial solutions for the clients that I work with. Whether that’s those at the entrepreneurial start-up phase right through to multi-national groups.

The clients I work with cover a range of sectors including professional services, creative industries, and property. Part of my portfolio is FCA regulated businesses requiring specialist compliance expertise such as Gabriel reporting.

With the common factor often being they are independently owned and managed businesses.

As these are some of the most entrepreneurial and dynamic businesses, I have had the opportunity to advise on tax efficiencies such as the potential use of the research and development tax credit regime. Equally, as at the heart of these businesses are the people, I provide advice on staff incentivisation and associated tax implications, whether that’s share option schemes or PAYE settlement scheme for staff benefits.

Recently as the digital age brings increasing amounts of data, I have been working with clients to review KPIs and benchmarking. Asking incisive questions as to what are the key areas that will improve data democracy internally, which in turn will drive performance forward in the business.

Furthermore, as many clients now trade both domestically and globally, I have built an understanding of the issues faced either by clients both expanding overseas or those setting up in the UK. Whether this has been guiding through the regulatory changes arising from Brexit, particularly around VAT or considering how to mitigate and manage the exposure to foreign currency fluctuations. As well as the more practical considerations of setting up a payroll.

Equally, I have extensive experience in the routine compliance of the audit process, annual accounts and corporation tax. Providing clients with timely updates on changes in legislation so they can plan and prepare for changes in advance to give added value to the audit. While working with clients to ensure their accounts are presented in the best possible light given the accounting framework.

Finally, I aim to provide a holistic approach to their tax affairs, balancing both the needs of the business’ corporation tax affairs while also giving careful consideration to the business owners personal affairs.

Overall, I take pride in assisting clients achieve their goals and seek to become a strong sounding board as they take their businesses forward.

James joined Goodman Jones in 2013 as a manager, having qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2011. 

Interests:

James is a keen runner and recently had the privilege of running in the London Marathon.   Away from the river James is keen cook and enjoys trying out new foods and flavours
